Pode, portanto pode se pensar que a agricultura no Sahel está condenada ao fracasso porém ela é protegida por uma flora altamente diversificada, que, por não ter sido usada pelo homem a protege dos ventos do Saara.
Normalmente estão presentesno Sahel os seguintes países: o Senegal, a Mauritânia, o Mali, o Burkina Faso, o Níger, a parte norte da Nigéria, o Chade, o Sudão, a Etiópia, a Eritreia, o Djibouti , e a Somália.
Esta área subsahariana, de clima tórrido e desértico, é uma das regiões mais pobres do planeta, castigada por frequentes secas, enfermidades e fome.
